Conservatives, Don't Wring Your Hands Over Not Supporting McCain
Posted on July 19, 2009 by Brian
A lot of talk in the blogosphere this weekend about conservative bloggers who didn’t support McCain in the last election. Some of it is clearly finger-pointing by conservatives who swallowed their principles and voted for him, choosing the lesser of two evils. Some of it is explanations as to why they didn’t — indeed, couldn’t — support McCain.
I fall into the last category, and I make no apologies for it. Sure, some on the right would say (and did) that not voting for McCain was, in effect, voting for Obama. I don’t buy that one bit. But even if I did, why on earth would I compromise my beliefs and my principles and support a man I detest? And believe me, detest is the correct word here.
I didn’t, couldn’t, and never will, support John McCain because he’s a RINO, a “Republican in Name Only”. He’s shown himself time and time again to be liberal on a lot of issues. Indeed, he showed us his true colors with his support of the bailouts.
He’s shown time and time again that he will stab someone in the back to get what he wants.
He’d walk over his own mother to get favorable treatment by the press. For years, the press complied. They adored John, because they knew he wasn’t “one of us”. It was only after he won the nomination that they turned on him. Quite predictably, I might add.
It all boils down to this: One way or another, the country was going to turn left and serious damage was going to be done. If the damage is going to be done anyway (and I don’t care what people say, McCain would have done some serious damage), I’d much rather it be a Democrat who does it, so people will finally wake up to what Democrats and liberals are all about. If McCain would have won and the recession got this bad (and it would have), it would have been the end of the Republican Party and the conservative movement.
Short-term, yes, it’s going to be a rough couple of years while Obama and his Democrat/Liberal cohorts in Congress run amuck. But now people are starting to wise up to what these people want and what they represent, and we will start winning elections again. When we do, conservatism will flourish once more and this country will get back on track. I think that’s a long-term goal we all can, and should, share.

Why Brian didn’t vote for John McCain…
But not voting at all in a particular contest (Brian did vote in the congressional elections; it isn’t like he didn’t vote at all) is consenting to the decisions of others. That I cannot do.
